Excerpt: Between refreshing my Instagram feed and keeping tabs on the latest political implosions, terror campaigns, culture-war shenanigans and environmental crises, I stop and think, "What a time to be alive." Maybe not in so many words, but anyway. Stuff’s complicated. Information overload and the open clash of worldviews are permanent fixtures on the landscape at this point. Persistent, mild panic seems like a perfectly reasonable response. In Winnipeg artist Ryan Smoluk’s commercial gallery debut at Actual, Culture Shock is present less as a single, traumatic encounter than a creeping, chronic condition of everyday life.
