Reducing Information Pollution

Overloaded 2012 a success – more events planned in future!

February 26, 2012 | Posted By Nathan Zeldes

The Information Overload Research Group’s Overloaded 2012 un-conference,  a lively one-day gathering of  information overload crusaders from a diversity of domains, was a complete success. Two dozen attendees spanning academic, industry, consulting, analyst and public sector backgrounds came together, exchanged research results, viewpoints and opinions, and formed friendships and plans for future cooperation.

We heard two interesting keynotes: Prof. David Levy of  the University of Washington spoke about “Educating for Acceleration and Overload”, and Jonathan Spira, IORG’s VP of research and CEO of Basex, shared new research findings on Information Overload.

This kind of informal meeting of like minds is clearly working, and we plan to hold similar events once or twice a year in various locations. If you missed this one, we hope to see you in the next!

I’ve been recently drawn to curation because of information overload. I’m also interested in Open Space Technology and UnConferences, so was delighted, via reading Liz Guthridge’s blog, a change & communication colleague, to learn of your event. I’m glad to also read more events are in your future…perhaps something out this way in Ann Arbor, Michigan. There are organizations, like the ODeXchange (Organization Development) that are very amenable to this approach and may offer assistance, as well as many social media and university/digital learning groups out this way.

If it is of any interest, Information overload was a topic I included in a recent presentation I made on curation tools. As I could not physically be at the presentation for a local group due to a new work commitment, I put it on video. My colleague JT put in context with the title “Blogging & Curation, Business Lessons Learned 2012″ on YouTube, via the local organization in Ann Arbor, LA2M.org

Thank you all so much for coming out on Sunday! It was a pleasure to work with all the incredible speakers and host you at our office. I’m looking forward to the next one!
